The Michaëlle Jean Foundation is supporting Mississauga First Nation as its partners with youth-driven arts group, Thinking Rock Community Arts, to deliver a Youth Community Action project in the community. The project is providing support, resources and tools for Mississauga First Nation youth to develop arts-based projects that identify and address a particular issue they are facing. It also aims to bring together Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal youth to foster shared connections with, and understanding of, Aboriginal culture and traditions. The project will fulfill these two goals by:
- Working with local elders, Chief and Council, band members, and leaders to ensure the approach reflects, respects and incorporates traditional values and teachings;
- Building local capacity for youth-led arts-based programming, through training and workshops with visiting artists and facilitators, in order to create lasting legacy and impact; and
- Supporting Aboriginal youth to develop and deliver a dynamic arts project that engages youth in creative dialogue about local issues.
