Tungasuvvingat Inuit (TI) is an Inuit non-profit organization that supports Inuit living in Ottawa through a wide range of programs and services. Assistance is also provided to some other urban communities in other parts of Ontario and Canada. TI’s Youth Community Action project is centered on enabling Inuit youth in Ottawa to work with community Elders to promote healthy living by discovering, celebrating and disseminating Inuit culture and traditions among their peers.
Youth will learn from Elders about traditions by experiencing them, and will then relate the knowledge gained to the community in a medium of their choosing, leaving a lasting legacy for the community and future generations. The project will help youth develop arts-based strategies for change to promote knowledge transition, while encouraging their peers to get involved in implementing their strategies. The following objectives will be pursued:
- Build skills, leadership and capacity among youth participants
- Revitalize the community through the energy and initiatives of youth
- Incubate sustainable forms of youth community engagement
- Encourage intergenerational connections
